PHYSOSTIGMA VENENOSUM

The common names of physostigma are Ordeal Bean, Chopnut, Calabar Bean. Physostigma is found in West Africa and was later introduced into Asia and Brazil. It was proved by Christison. The mother tincture is prepared from the seeds in which the active principal Physostigmene is present, and dilution from it. It is claimed that Physostigma relieves Myopia, night blindness and some other diseases of the eyes. It has also been employed in general paralysis of the insane and in progressive muscular atrophy and also in tetanus of the traumatic origin.
